Combining nature experiences, educational opportunities, and digital innovation
With the new “Planet Trail” on the Gerlitzen Alpe, the Villach – Faaker Lake – Ossiacher Lake region is setting new standards in combining nature experiences, educational opportunities, and digital innovation. The approximately 2.5-kilometer-long themed trail leads the existing “Kanzelhöhe” circular trail to the solar observatory and takes hikers on a journey through our solar system. Eleven large panel signs – embedded in the impressive mountain scenery – convey facts about the solar system, the eight planets, the asteroid belt, and our central star, the sun. The analog experience is complemented by two augmented reality (AR) experiences that bring the solar system to life on a smartphone.
Interactive learning with web-based Augmented Reality (webAR)
Scanning the QR codes on the large panel signs, visitors can choose between two digital AR experiences: one dedicated to the four gas planets, the other to the rocky planets. Imagine stepping into a virtual world without downloading a thing. That’s the power of webAR. It’s packed with information and fun facts conveyed via animated 3D models and narration in both English and German. No apps, no fuss, just pure AR magic.
